Human Shelter Foundation – Free Mobile Restaurants

Karachi is widely recognized as the economic hub of Pakistan. As a metropolitan city, it offers opportunities and hope to people from all walks of life. With its high-rise buildings, shopping centers, modern infrastructure, and fast-paced lifestyle, the city presents an image of prosperity and progress, leading millions to believe that life here promises growth and stability.

Each year, countless individuals migrate to Karachi in search of better livelihoods. Unfortunately, for many, these hopes remain unfulfilled. Due to limited education, lack of skills, or circumstances beyond their control, thousands find themselves trapped in financial hardship. Daily wage labor becomes their only source of survival, and in an expensive city like Karachi, managing even basic meals turns into a daily struggle.

Recognizing this growing need, Human Shelter Foundation launched its Free Dastarkhwan initiative in 2011 with the aim of providing three meals a day to hardworking individuals at no cost. The initiative proved to be highly successful and now operates in multiple cities across Pakistan. Building on this success, the Foundation introduced Free Mobile Restaurants to further extend food assistance across Karachi and beyond.

The purpose of the Free Mobile Restaurants is not only to provide meals but also to offer a dignified space where people can eat without discrimination or shame. A variety of nutritious meals, including Karachi’s famous biryani, are served daily. The food provided through these mobile restaurants is free from Zakat or Sadaqah restrictions, ensuring accessibility for people of all sects and beliefs. Human Shelter Foundation firmly believes that labeling individuals as “beggars” or “needy” is disrespectful; instead, the goal is to create an environment where everyone can dine with honor and equality.
